Teilhard de Chardin, Pierre

Teilhard de Chardin, Pierre
   Scientist and Theologian.
Teilhard was born near Clermont in France and he joined the Jesuit Order in 1899. For much of his career he worked in China as a palaeontologist and he spent his final years in the United States of America. During his lifetime, he was primarily regarded as a scientist and he published more than a hundred and seventy articles on palaeontology. Today, however, he is remembered for his theological work The Phenomenon of Man (published in the year of his death) and the devotional Divine Milieu. He attempted to relate theology to science by arguing that God is part of the evolutionary process of the universe; it is centred on Christ and it is moving towards the omega point. Although he was regarded with suspicion by the Roman Catholic hierarchy, his work has proved popular.
